Singapore is hosting the 2010 Youth Olympics, chosen ahead of perennial terrorist nation Russia. Politicians are rejoicing, students are in elation, hotels make new space for enlarged coffers...and I couldn't care less.

When the sight of a sea of red greeted my eyes on the tube yesterday, I thought national day had come early this year..before I was rudely reminded by fatigue that I had in fact wasted an entire day at the office. Nope no public holiday there. Chances that a few thousand people would share a strike of the 10 million lottery were fairly slim as well, so this could be eliminated. What's the point of rejoicing over winning a paltry $100 on national television anyway..

Having the F1/Olympics/World Cup hosted right here in SG means jack squat to the ordinary citizen. Well, the World Cup would be interesting only for the fact that I like soccer, but heck you wouldn't catch me running amok on television celebrating as though I was promised hot torrid sex with multiple playboy playmates.

To me, this sort of garbage means blocked roads, increased security, delays and general annoyance at such inconveniences. Couple this to the fact that our good friends the gahmen will be spending our taxpayer's money to build the neccessary infrastructure to accommodate the goddamn youth olympics, money that could be better spent building more roads instead of ERPs.

I mean its not like our gahmen is the kind that would compromise its citizens for the sake of impressing the outside world right..? ...RIGHT??

So while the tourism industry creams its collective pants thinking about its perceived potential revenue, the local citizens receive benefits like Economic Restructuring Shares to offset a perennial GST hike and NTUC/Popular vouchers; If we're lucky perhaps even another extra month's bonus come end of the year. Its not as though increased commodity prices actually affect anyone yea?

Therefore, well done Singapore on reaching national adulthood by achieving what everyone thought would be impossible! You've proven that any country can host something as grand as the Youth Olympics as long as enough locals are sacrificed in the process. The influx of visitors to our great nation and the resulting job opportunities will of course be handled not by our own incapable hands but by the blood & sweat of our compadres chinamen/pinoys/indons/viets...

To celebrate Singapore now reaching maturity, I have also partaken in the joy of attaining adulthood by purchasing my first every shaver. Hoo-fucking-ray!
