as a civic minded citizen, it is my singaporean responsiblity to sincerely wish somebody catches Mas Selamat at the quickest possible opportunity..
therefore, if you do come across anybody that matches his facial description, please feel at ease to raise the proverbial alarm to facilitate the authorities in arresting his jihad behind.
its not my place to comment on the coincidental nature of his 'escape', nor is it appropriate to question the integrity of the detention officers because somewhere out there somebody is getting paid to question these sort of things..it is however in my utmost interest that this terrorist is apprehended as quickly as possible..
even as i type now the woodlands causeway is experiencing a perennial jam because of heightened security checks. you've read the stories about lorry drivers waiting days for their turn to empty their trailers for the authorities to find more illegal immigrants with little hope of ever finding a crippled malay huddled away in a corner. it gets even worse for private car drivers, who're forced to wait up to (?!) 40mins, effectively burning off enough petrol to fuel a cross country run around the island. as desperately as Mas Selamat needs to be captured, my Accord also needs its weekly msian petrol jaunt, or face the rising possiblity of paying upwards of SGD$2.00 for a single litre of standard grade petrol.
nevertheless, i feel the need to commend the efforts of the local authorities. even though everyone secretly knows a scheming JI terrorist leader wouldn't be caught dead trying to leave the country via the causeway, the police are still relentless in enforcing strict checks on every single vehicle attempting to leave the country. honestly, as a member of the Singapore Armed Forces, i respect their endurance. i must also mention the brilliant tactics they use to twart any possible escape attempts...its almost as if someone in the police force suddenly decided to enforce logic in their decision making process.
now..instead of them checking every vehicle at where they normally check your petrol indicator, one officer checks the car CONCURRENTLY while your passport gets stamped by the booth auntie. unless you're a regular driver, you have NO idea how much time this process saves. further compliments can be heaped on the police for the implementation of the fingerprint scanner. in addition to the vehicle check at the booth, all passengers are now also required to scan their fingerprints, which is matched to Mas Selamat's in real time. effectively, they no longer have to worry about fake goatees.
i seldom have kind words for anything related to gahmen organizations but this warrants an exception. while i hate the artificial jam like any normal functioning person, i respect the efforts of the police in trying to ease the inconveniences their checks impose on the citizendry.
